A few months ago, the IBC Bank on the corner of Main and 24th was vacated and torn down. “They better not put up another bank just like it in its place!” we said. We were absolutely delighted to see a teeny strip mall go up with Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers as the first store. When we lived in Tulsa, one of few perks was Steak & Shake, our favorite post-Mass meal. Once you’ve had a steakburger…well, nothing else is quite the same! If you get a chance to go to Steak & Shake, the best burger in the house is the Buttery Wisconsin Burger. Oh, it’s so juicy and cheesy and just plain wonderful! I’ve missed Steak & Shake so very much!
Well, yesterday, after Mass, Scottie and I decided to go check it out and see how it compares. It’s a very small restaurant, but it was packed! There was outside seating and a lot of people were sitting outside and eating since it wasn’t too terribly cold outside. Looking over the menu, there were a few varieties of steakburger, but not nearly as many Steak & Shake. They also have hot dogs available, and, much to my delight, there was a steakburger and hot dog combo! After looking over the menu, we both opted for the double steakburger, with bacon for Scottie. I was never fond of the shoestring fries at Steak & Shake, so I ordered onion rings, but Scottie went for the fries.
I’m going to warn you, the onion rings were AWESOME! And the Freddy’s fry sauce just put the taste sensation right over the top! It’s kind of like a thousand island sauce–creamy and a little zippy. It was perfect with onion rings. Scott was horribly disappointed with the fries, though. They were the stringiest shoestring fries ever! I’ve never seen such teeny little fries. We both agreed that with chili and cheese (which is certainly available!), they would be just fine, but otherwise, the onion rings are a much better option.
The burgers came with mustard, onion, and pickle, which has to be the weirdest combination ever. I didn’t mind it, but I’m used to burgers coming with mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle as standard toppings. Next time, I’ll know to tell them exactly how I want it! Overall, they were great, though. The patties were exactly like the Steak & Shake steakburgers we’ve come to crave.
Since they don’t have as many varieties like the Western Steakburger or the Buttery Wisconsin Steakburger we had at Steak & Shake, I’m going to say Freddy’s isn’t quite as good. BUT! They’re still easily the best burger in town!
We were going to get a frozen custard–they have classic turtle and a Hawaiian sundae that looked wonderful, but the line was awfully long, so after our burgers, we decided to skip the custard this time.
If there’s a Freddy’s near you, GO! If there’s a Steak & Shake, go there instead! I don’t know, though, the custard might be a deal breaker!
Finally, I’d like to give a sterling review to Andrea @ The Champ Life for hosting the Monday Review link-up. Check it out!
